This is something I will speak to you over and over again until I’m blue-in-the-face! I’ve learned from some impressive marketers like Dan Kennedy, Bill Glazer, Joe Polish, Jeff Paul, Joe Sugarman and many others. I believe some of the BEST speaker-marketing ideas originate from outside the speaking industry. This is a lesson a lot of speakers miss.
I have never listened to a single KISS album, wouldn’t have a clue of any KISS song titles and couldn’t choose a single band member besides band leader Gene Simmons. Here is the reason why I know Gene and observe him. As I was channel surfing on the television late one night several years ago, I came across Gene being interviewed on a business show.
Gene’s interview fascinated me as I thought why’s a band-guy on this business show? This ought to be funny and quite entertaining. So I thought I’d watch for a few minutes and get a good laugh. As I listened, I immediately realized Gene Simmons was brilliant. The host asked Gene why KISS sold so many albums. The host also inquires how KISS continuously earn mega-millions every year while many other talented musicians never seem to make it.
Gene’s reply was profound and made me an immediate fan. He said, ‘That’s easy. Most artists just do not get it. While they’re all out spending a significant amount of money and time trying to craft their songs, vocals as well as lyrics, I’m developing a business by creating uniqueness, brand and other income streams!’
WOW! Talk about someone who gets it! If you didn’t catch this message, then you’re missing among the most prominent speaker marketing lessons that could sky-rocket your speaking business and earnings to extraordinary levels. What Gene was speaking about was that he didn’t pinpoint a lot of his time on the craft of being an artist. He focused the majority of his time on the marketing and business area.
So what does this have to do with you as a speaker? It has everything to do with you and your speaking business. I am always speaking to new and experienced speakers that I coach in my boot camps and in my coaching programs that… you’re not in the speaking business. You are in the business of marketing your speaking services!
I don’t care what your message is about or how excellent of a speaker you are if you’re not focusing 90% of your time and energy on positioning and marketing yourself and your originality while making several streams of speaking income, then you won’t increase your business. Remember: ‘The marketing is more beneficial than the mastery!’ How true that is!
It doesn’t matter how talented you are at the craft, in this case delivering a presentation. If you cannot effectively market yourself to secure bookings and get event coordinators to give you money, then you’ll experience frustration as a speaker. From this moment forward, always focus the majority of your time and efforts on the marketing, not the craft and watch your speaking business soar to new heights you dreamed of reaching!
