In order to boost sales, companies launch many different marketing campaigns.
Among the most successful of these are Carlsberg’s ‘probably the best larger in the world’ campaign. This has created much brand awareness and developed Carlsberg a positive reputation, which then leads to increased sales and profits. However, a company such as Carlsberg has a huge advertising and marketing budget, how can your business compete with this? Social media is one of the ways in which your business can compete. Social media tools are primarily free, they provide equal footings, whether your business has just been set up, or your company is an established brand.
The purpose of this article is to explain how you can utilize these social media tools, in order to increase your sales.
First though, let’s look at three examples of where social media marketing has led to a direct increase in sales. Firstly, Sony reported in February 2010 that Twitter had boosted their sales by 1 million. Then Dell announced in June of the same year that their sales and had increased by $3 million through Twitter. You may argue that these two companies are well established brands and that these figures are insignificant. However, social media marketing works for small business too. John Fluevog’s business, John Fluevog’s boots and shoes Ltd announced that through 2009 their sales increased by 40%. Coincidentally, this was the same year they introduced a social media marketing plan, there is no doubt this played a huge part in increasing the sales that year.
The question now needs to be asked: in what ways can social media lead to increased sales and brand awareness? Well, there are millions of people using social media all the time. A television advert for instance will only reach those watching it at the time; furthermore the consumer is unable to directly give feedback to the advert. In contrast to this, one tweet can reach millions of people over a sustained time period.
Take the example of Sainsbury’s supermarket. They frequently tweet with any offers they may have at a given time, anybody wishing to know these offers simply needs to follow Sainsbury’s on Twitter. This following provides a huge customer base, whilst also creating brand awareness and increasing sales. What’s more is that Sainsbury’s customers can give direct responses to these tweets. This provides a great opportunity for customer insight and interaction to be gained. Your business should aim to copy this technique, a creatively written tweet, can act as free advertising. Done intelligently, this can significantly boost sales and brand awareness.
Social media marketing works in a similar way to other forms of marketing; it is viral. A small company initially works on a word of mouth basis, people tell their friends. Social media, especially Twitter and Facebook, work with this ‘friend’ concept. People can give you positive reviews, recommend your product and tweet about your company. This whole social community allows your company’s name and brand to be viewed by a significant amount of people. Continuous use of social media over time creates brand awareness and thus helps to increase sales.
One of our clients, PeachorLemon, a car review website, gained over one hundred followers on Twitter within a week. This is a hundred more people who know about promotions and offers, may tell their friends, visit the website or use other social media outlets to mention PeachorLemon. All this creates brand awareness and over time increased use of the website, thus increasing its value.
As we have seen, the effect social media can have upon branding and increased sales know no end, it will only continue to grow. Although brand awareness may only be one aspect to increasing sales, using social media to heighten your brand awareness will have a potentially dramatic effect on your business, thus we would urge your business to embrace it today.
